This tutorial helps you get up and running with your first assessment. We’ll stick with default settings in most cases in order to keep it simple and straightforward. Let’s get started!
When you first log into your new account, you will see your assessment dashboard, with only your sample assessments listed so far.
Let’s create a new assessment! Click “New Assessment” in the upper right-hand corner of the page:
Now we need to decide if we want a “Simple” or “Type-Based” assessment.
A simple assessment is just that — each question in your assessment is assigned a score value. At the end of the assessment, those scores are added up to arrive at an overall score for the assessment. If this sounds like what you need, you can click “Simple” in the “Create Assessment” dialog and then skip to the “Setup” section of the tutorial below.
If not, keep reading to find out about Type-based assessments.
A type-based assessment allows you to give your users multiple scores for a single assessment. You create types or categories in your assessment, and the score for each question is assigned to one of those types. After the user has answered all of the questions, they will receive a separate score for each category. If you’d like to know more, check out our video tutorials on type-based assessments.
To create a type based assessment, click “Type-Based” in the Create Assessment dialog.
Now you will see the assessment editor with five tabs across the top where you will create your assessment. When creating a new assessment you can go through each of these tabs from left to right.
This is where you tell Assessment Generator how you want your assessment to work. We’ll leave most of these settings in their default state, but we do want to customize the title, header, and footer of the assessment.
Click into the Title field on the Setup tab and enter a title for your assessment. Next, we’ll edit the Assessment Header. When you hover over this field, you’ll see an “edit” link in the lower left corner of the field, which you can click to edit your assessment header. You’ll see this behavior throughout Assessment Generator.
When you click “edit,” a popup window will appear that shows a text editor. You can use this tool to enter and format text so that your assessment looks just right. For now, double click the text “New Assessment” to select it and enter the title of your assessment. Double-click the new text and select “24” in the Size dropdown menu in the formatting toolbar. Click Save to save your changes.
Next, modify your assessment footer by following the same process for that field.

Near the bottom of the Setup tab, you’ll see a section titled Social Media. This section is only available in paid accounts. Here you determine how the link to your assessment appears when you or your users post it on social media. For now, we’ll leave the defaults in place.

Click “Save” in the upper right-hand corner of the assessment editor, above the tabs. Now let’s add some questions to the assessment!
If you selected a Simple assessment, you won’t see a Types tab. Please skip to the Questions section below.
On the Types tab, click “Add Type”. Enter a name, and in the Type Description text editor, enter the content that you would like to show to users who score highest in this type. Click Save, then click Add Type to create your next type.
For example, if you are creating an assessment to help users determine which of your products is best for them, your types might be Product A, Product B, and Product C. In the Type Description for each type, you would provide a description of that product and why it is most suitable.
When users take your assessment, their results will include the type description of the type in which they scored highest (or you can choose to show all of your type descriptions).

When you click the Questions tab, you’ll see fields for “Assessment Instructions” and “Footer on Questions Pages,” and an “Add Question” button. Click the Add Question button.
In the popup that appears, there are 5 types of questions from which to choose:
- Yes/No or True/False Question. These are also called “Binary” Questions because only 2 possible answers are available and they are usually polar opposites. You can change the labels (and scoring) as desired.
- Scale Question. These are questions where the response is chosen from a range of values, often 1-5 or 1-10. The range values and labels and labels can be set as desired. For scale ranges less than or equal to 5, you can also choose to display these questions with either a slider or a set of buttons.
- Options Question. These are sometimes known as multiple choice questions where the user is asked to choose the best answer from several possible answers that are listed. It is possible to allow users to select more than one answer if appropriate. Each option can be assigned unique score values and can be assigned to separate types.
- Checkbox Question. This question type asks users to check the box if the corresponding question applies to them. The point value for this question type can be set as desired.
- Narrative Question. This question type asks users to enter a typed, narrative answer to a question. This question type is used to provide qualitative information and does not contribute a score to assessments.

Questions for Type-Based Assessments
If you are creating a simple assessment, skip to the next section, Styling
When creating questions for a type-based assessment, you can assign the point values for each question to one of your types in the Assign to Type dropdown menu.

On the Style tab, you can set the colors of various elements of your assessment. Use these settings to make your assessment match your brand image.

If you’re working on a Type-based assessment, you won’t see a scoring tab – skip to the Results section below.
Here you can define the custom responses your users receive depending on how they score.
Click Add Score Interpretation. Enter a title for your score interpretation. For example, we might use “Poor Sleeper.”
Enter text to show users who fall into the “Poor Sleeper” category and click Save.
With Automatic Scoring, Assessment Generator sets the score range for this score interpretation to the entire possible range of scores (1-10) for this assessment. Now let’s create another interpretation and see how this changes.
Click Add Score Interpretation again, and create a new interpretation for “Average Sleeper.” Save the interpretation – now users who score 1-5 will receive the feedback for “Poor Sleeper” and users who score 6-10 receive the feedback for “Average Sleeper.”
Create one more score interpretation, and notice that the score ranges are recalculated again. You don’t have to create your interpretation bands in the correct order. If you click and drag one of the score bands and drop it into another location, it will receive new score values based on its location in the list.
To customize your scoring bands, click the Automatic / Manual scoring switch and you’ll be able to set your own score ranges for each interpretation.

Publishing your assessment
Click the Actions menu and choose the “Add to Site” option. Use the “Direct link to your assessment” URL at the top in links on your website. Or use the iframe code to embed your assessment directly in your site. You can learn more about how to do that in our video tutorial on Sharing Your Assessment .
